Yes, it's that time once again, for the Circus of the Candidates! Oh no, you must be thinking, not another blog about elections and voting and arguing and mud slinging and...
Stop.
I will not be writing about any of those things. I won't even be writing about specific candidates and their platforms...(or lack thereof, Trump...you bastard!)
OK, sorry I let that one slip.
But seriously, my reason for posting this is to finally explain to the conservative people I know (who seem quite clueless about this) why I and so many other like minded people are up in arms and feeling combative about the economy, the environment and the class system. Why so many hard working people in our country and others are feeling marginalized and oppressed. Why there are people like me shaking our heads when we see the humans that society deems to be good, solid leadership candidates.
So picture this. We are all on a ship in the middle of the universe. The planet we once knew as our Earth Mother has died, she has no resources left for the creatures she used to be able to love and nurture. (C'mon, stay with me here...I do have a slight penchant for the dramatic, but there is a point to all of this, I promise.)
This state of the art ship is the only thing standing between humanity and total annihilation. This space ship provides everything we need for basic survival; food, air, water...but it needs CONSTANT upkeep. This ship needs maintenance and the crew (us) need to make daily sacrifices to be sure the systems that provide our air, food and water continue to thrive.
Now imagine there are people on the ship...a few compared to the majority of crew who understand what needs to be done...these few are wasting resources, squandering the water, polluting the air exchangers. They have put themselves above the needs of their fellow travelers by deciding they are above the law and will live life in the ship on their terms because they are greedy.
But greed has no place in survival. You can't be greedy and expect to live a long and prosperous life. Life demands sacrifice. The ship demands sacrifice. Sacrifice in this case means resource sharing. It means taking care of the ship as if it is the most important thing in the universe, which for us, it is! The ship is life, plain and simple. The ship is our protection and our salvation.
In this particular scenario, I know what would happen to those few who were wasting the precious resources. We'd blast those fuckers out of the air lock without so much as a blink of an eye. Why? Because they made illogical, bad choices that put everyone else, myself included, at risk. They put our future generation at risk. They put our entire existence at risk.
I use this example because we ARE on a ship of sorts. This planet, our Mother Earth, is our ship. She is the only thing keeping us protected from the cold, dark void of airless space. She provides air, water and light...basic building blocks for life, love and laughter. She keeps the harmful radiation from entering our atmosphere and cooking us to death. What an amazing ship we have to travel the cosmos!!!
And yet...we have a group, a few compared to the many...who have deemed themselves more important than the greater good. They squander our resources; water and air...they contaminate our food sources with poisons and genetic tinkering...and they purposely work to keep people confused, unhealthy and divided so they won't realize they have the power to take the planet...our ship...BACK!
This is why I will be voting the way I do in this upcoming election, because of this ship scenario, which is actually more reality than scenario. We are that crew, people, and we need to take care of this ship with everything we have. We need to make those sacrifices now rather than later, because later is not always a given in these circumstances. And I absolutely challenge any of my conservative friends to find the logic in what those greedy ship dwellers were doing. Is it logical to squander limited resources for opulence and decadence? Is it logical there are human beings on this ship that are dying from thirst and starvation because they no longer have access to clean water or nutritious food, while others have enough to consume AND waste? Is it logical that for profit and power, they are willing to throw entire species of living creatures under the bus?
Unfortunately, we have no air lock we can blast them out of. But we do have voices, we have knowledge, we have awareness and we have each other.
This upcoming election is our chance at a revolution, and this revolution must happen now! We can no longer afford to sit on the sidelines with our head in our hands, lamenting our fate. WE are the people that create our fate. We are the ones who must take back that banner of power and start taking care of our ship. We need to make these sacrifices, and force others to do the same. We don't have time to hold hands and sing Kumbaya while those few in power destroy our ship!
Get your game plan going, and buckle up, it's going to be a very bumpy ride, yo!
So, tell me...who's ready to save this amazing ship of ours?
